Belize: San Ignacio to Caye Caulker

Day 17

Island-bound! Today we were leaving San Ignacio and heading onto the backpacker favourite - Caye Caulker!

First of all we caught a chicken bus to Belize City. Three hours later we arrived...much to the relief of those who hadn't bagged a seat.

Then we caught a taxi to the ferry terminal, where we stocked up on a few more snacks! (do you sense a theme yet?!

Check out these unusual Oreos and pringles...

And sassy signs:

Then we had a very windy ferry over to Caye Caulker

Then we arrived in what felt like paradise.

There were blue seas and skies, palm trees - and sunshine!

There's not really a 'beach' on Caye Caulker but plenty of decks to chill out on.

And the balconies at our cute hotel.

Lisa and I headed out for a wander through the small easy-going town.  The main street is a sandy path through the centre of town scattered with small bakeries, restaurants and seafood stands.

The main activities on the island are relaxation and reef exploration (Hol Chan Marine Reserve).
We treated ourselves to a few indulgences...freshly made watermelon juice

Then we discovered a super friendly coffee place, "Ice and Beans"...

...after various tasters (and a free donut!), I opted for an iced coffee with almond and caramel.

That is how to spend your Monday afternoon coffee break! *sigh*

Then it was down to 'work' - we had to figure out what to do the next day on the island!  We booked a full day snorkelling tour with Ragamuffin Tours.

Afterwards we walked down the the Split - Caye Caulker is actually two islands, since it was split by Hurricane Hattie in 1961.  There were lots of people relaxing in the evening sunshine.

Chilling out in our room before dinner, we mucked around on youtube, sharing some of our favourite videos:
Lisa's: Frank Medrano's train insane
Mine: Glozell's cinnamon challenge...and in fact any of her challenges!

Lisa had never heard of the cinnamon challenge, so it was 'game on' for that night!  uh-oh!  Little did we know that this would be the start of something...we are still 'foodie challenging' now.

We headed to The Happy Lobster for dinner - I highly recommend this unpretentious restaurant - Lonely Planet even calls it "a Caulker institution". Their super friendly staff made helpful recommendations and happily changed dishes to suit us.

Starting with 'panty rippers' once more...

We played with the portrait setting on my camera...such sophistication!

Before moving onto a delicious start of mixed ceviche, including conch.

Then heaven arrived...

...a huge seafood sharing platter: loser, shrimp, kingfisher steak and snapper.

Mmmhmmm.

Then it was cinnamon time.

I totally won!  Not sure it's going to earn me a Guinness World Record (or Nobel Prize!) but ultra-competitive me was delighted.

We rewarded ourselves with peppermint tea and a delicious peanut butter snickers bar on our balcony!
