First 24 hours in Munich

I’ve now moved to Munich, Germany for 2 years! Here’s how I decided to spend my first weekend in the city I’ll now be calling ‘home’…

Having arrived at my new apartment I had to pop out to the food shops to stock up as I nothing and Munich’s shops are all closed on Sunday. To embrace the new food culture, I selected some typical German foods - sausages, sauerkraut, rye bread and some other items a little less known!

After unpacking my suitcases I was pretty worn out, so watched a movie and then headed to bed.

Sunday morning…breakfast time! I’m living in Schwabing and so headed to ‘Cafe Schwabing’ for some food. I bundled up warm as it was pretty chilly outside (about 5’C).

After perusing the menu (with my very limited German) I decided on the house breakfast, which did not disappoint! I had smoked salmon, roast beef, egg, bread, a selection of sauces, orange juice and a coffee:

The portion was huge and set me up for the rest of the day. I was clearly in the place to be on a Sunday morning as quickly almost every seat was taken and there was a friendly bustley atmosphere.

After I was well fed, I decided to go for a walk and then get a little cultural!

On Sundays a lot of the city’s museums offer a €1 entry so I wandered through Schwabing to ‘Neue Pinakothek’ http://www.pinakothek.de/en - an art museum which has a collection of 19th and early 20th century paintings and sculptures.

The museum building was very modern with different room themes and some impressive pieces.

There was even Van Gogh’s ‘Sunflowers’ painting.

Opposite the museum is the main art museum ‘Alte Pinakothek’ which is an impressive building…I’ve put it on the ‘To Do List’ for another weekend.

Wandering back home, I spotted a few interesting things.

Whilst there are some people out and about, it’s very quiet as the only places open are bakeries and restaurants.

Finally, I popped over to the ‘Nordbad’ https://www.swm.de/english/m-baeder/sauna/nordbad.html - the traditional bath house which I’ll definitely be visiting one weekend to experience their extensive sauna selection.
