Day 20: 2013 Autumn Travels [Buenos
Aires, Argentina à
Atlanta, Georgia, USA]
Unfortunately
today was my last day in South America (at least for this trip!) The roommate and I got up early and went
shopping, even buying matching scarfs which we felt appropriately reflected the
South American colour palette!
Then we met the
rest of the group for a farewell brunch at a cafe in Florida. I treated myself to coffee and delicious
cake, basically a mound of pastry, dulce de leche and meringue!
Then some of us
headed onto La Cabrera, a Palermo steakhouse numerous people had highly recommended to me. In the words of Lonely Planet “if you eat at
only one steakhouse in BA, make it this one!”
To help us decide from the impressive menu, we went for some Malbec wine, whilst checking out the massive hunks of meat being served around us.
The generously
portioned steak arrives on wooden boards (I opted for rare rump) alongside
their trademark array of many small, varied side dishes. These vary from condiments and sauces, such
as olives and sundried tomatos to calabaza (squash) puree, sweet pickled garlic
and couscous.
Afterwards we
wandered through the cafe-lined streets of Palermo Viejo before getting the
metro back to the centre of town. We
walked up to the obelisco for a final close-up (it’s tough trying to get the ‘right’
shot!) before a quick final coffee before I caught a taxi to the airport.
I softened the
blow of leaving South America, again (!) with a final dulce de leche treat!
I also mulled
over my highlighted from the last 3 weeks, settling on:
·
My
exhilarating helicopter ride over Rio de Janiero
·
The entertaining
boat party in Paraty
·
Using
the walkways to view and get close to the Iguassu Falls
·
Buenos
Aires nightlife – particularly the drums at “La Bomba”
·
The
steak lunch at La Cabrera, Buenos Aires
