“Classics on Odeon Square” Munich

For one night in July, Odeonsplatz hosts classical music performances by the Symphony Orchestra and Munich Choir called “Klassik Am Odeonsplatz”.

My friend was back in Munich for the weekend, so to celebrate we went for dinner pre-show at our favourite “Hans Im Glück” for cocktails and burgers. Read more about the popular Munich burger chain here.

We paused briefly to enjoy the stunning view over Munich’s skyline from the top of "Bayerische Hof” - a 5 star hotel on our route to Odeonsplatz.

Then we took our seats in the crowd. We had selected one of the cheaper tickets so we had plastic chairs towards the back (prices are from 19 to 78 €).

We settled in with more cocktails - I had a Hugo (prosecco and elderflower) while my friend went for a campari spritz.

The beautiful pedestrian square is surrounded by the Residenz (Royal Palace), Feldherrnhalle (Field Marshal’s Hall) and the Theatinerkirche (Theatiner Church).

This year was the 15th time the summer concert took place. The theme this summer was “a Spanish Night” with Pablo Heras-Casado as musical director and Julia Fischer (a Münchnerin herself) as the solo violinist.

Whilst not huge classical music fans, it was good. Though for me it was more the dramatic setting which was the highlight.

As the summer evening turned into night the historical buildings were illuminated in different colours to create a special atsmophere and background to the excellent musical talents on display (I assume!).
